Alley House

Project Type

Residential - Exploratory

Location

Los Angeles, CA

Date

August 2023

This modern two-story DADU embraces the architectural principles of solid and void, using a volumetric composition that separates living and sleeping areas for functional clarity. Anchored by a central longitudinal axis, the design shifts the two primary volumes to create a clear visual break—enhancing spatial flow while forming a private terrace off the main bedroom and accommodating a compact staircase on the opposite end.

Designed with privacy and flexibility in mind, especially for short-term rentals or guest accommodations, the bedrooms and terrace are oriented toward the alleyway, maintaining visual separation from the primary residence. The ground floor includes a garage, workshop space, and storage room, maximizing utility on a tight urban footprint.

Upstairs, the open-concept layout features a kitchen with breakfast bar, built-in seating, and a flexible living area that can double as a dining space when entertaining. Vaulted ceilings in the communal zones amplify light and openness, while the minimalist exterior finish keeps the façade clean and understated—perfect for high-density urban infill or backyard additions.
